The Chromecast simply would not appear in the setup box. So, I searched for this forum topic and started to read the even-more-demoralizing postings.
We have an early FIOS router (MI424WR) that's been in the basement since the day our service started years ago. I have no idea how to get in there and manage any settings, and no confidence in Verizon's ability or willingness to help me do so. The last thing I need is to screw up everything else by trying to install the Chromecast.
I was was just about to give up and ship it back when, as a last ditch alternative, I brought out my Droid smartphone. I put in the Chromecast app and fired it up. Immediately all the info from the Chromecast appeared, and the setup was complete in just a few seconds. No router issues whatsoever. The Chromecast now works fine on the Chromebook as well as the phone.
Of course I have no idea how or why this solution works, but it's fast and simple. Don't know if it works with an iOS app or not, but you could always borrow a Droid phone, set it to wifi, download the app and go from there, as it will work on other devices like the Chromebook or a PC but not set up on them.
BTW: Does anybody know if FIOS will give you a new router for upgraded wifi, or them make you stick to the ancient a/b capabilities until the thing dies?
If you've never changed the settings for your router, then there's a good chance it is set to use WEP wireless security, which is very INsecure. You should change it to use WPA2, and use a long, strong password.
